Mélissa Mourez studied at the University of Ottawa for a BFA, with a specialization in photography. The primary concerns of her practice include paths, memory, and time. Each portfolio is a series that explores the concept of familiar spaces. These spaces are investigated through walks, travelling, and by observing one location for a given time. Capturing moments she has seen within these landscapes allows her to create a physical entity onto which her memories become attached.
Calculating time helps to focus attention on what is seen at the instant of exposure as well as the invisible moments between photographs. Mourez uses the space between images as a visual device that encourages contemplation of the missing moments that can only be filled by memory.
