Our story
Mélissa Mourez (b. 1994) is an emerging multidisciplinary artist based in Quinte West, Ontario. She holds a M.A. in Photography Preservation and Collections Management from Toronto Metropolitan University (2023) and a B.F.A. in Visual Arts from the University of Ottawa (2019). Some of her accomplishments include receiving the Paradigm(e) Award and Louise Perry Scholarship in 2017 and participating in an artist residency abroad (2018). Her artworks were included in group exhibitions, and can be found in private collections in Canada and the United States.
The primary concerns of my photography practice revolve around identity through self-reflection and (un)familiar environments. Each portfolio is a series that explores the concept of connection, whether it be to surrounding spaces or personal interactions. Although my photographs rarely feature individuals, each one serves as a self-portrait diving into my perceptions of lived moments. Capturing such moments allows me to create a physical entity onto which my memories become attached. When displaying my art, I use the space between prints to encourage the viewer to contemplate the missing moments.
"My painting practice is a full-body experience that requires me to submerge myself in targeted emotions. I achieve this in various ways: loosely - by connecting to music and reflecting on specific lived experiences; strategically - by creating parameters to consistently guide my approach. I use painting as a tool to help me find peace during unsettling and/or overwhelming periods of time.
Consideration for everything we create
After 10+ years as a creative, Mélissa strives to make meaningful connections with clients by considering their stories.
When it comes to card-making, she offers the potential for an additional gift — flowers. Merging two of her great passions — art and nature — her greeting cards include wildflower seed papers made from recycled materials. These serve as considerate ways to share kind words with the people you cherish the most. Her cards can then be planted to give back to nature (and attract butterflies, dragonflies, and bees).
Mélissa’s appreciation for archival materials also largely influences her product selection. She considers everything from canvas, paint and/or ink pigment, and paper quality. By supporting her practice, you invest in original artworks made special for you and your forever home.
